Sitting Quietly Doing Nothing
BY IMRE VALLYON. EXCERPT FROM THE MAGICAL MIND
Sitting Quietly Doing Nothing refers to every action you do. It is another way of saying: Do what is necessary, but do it without an ego. You walk quietly doing nothing. You eat quietly doing nothing. You perform all actions quietly doing nothing.

"Doing nothing" means that the ego does nothing; whatever is done is just done. You do things without the ego being involved. You just do it because it needs to be done.

"Quietly" doesn't mean that you don't talk; it simply means action with Inner Stillness. When you are sitting, walking, talking, or performing any action "quietly", that Inner Stillness and Unity remains.

Just as with all of these methods, this practice is twofold: You sit down and meditate on it, and you engage in the practice throughout the day. All throughout the day, you remain in Inner Stillness. You sit, walk, talk, and act "quietly".

Suppose you have to wash the dishes, then you wash the dishes. You just do it; there is no ego involved. That is "doing nothing." When we engage the ego, then all action is doing something. It is "I," the ego, doing it, and it becomes very important. In this way, however, all action is "doing nothing".

Sitting Quietly Doing Nothing simply means that the Self only IS. If you understand this method and practice it continually, then suddenly you will realize that the Self only IS and everything else is simply being done. The whole of Creation is like this: The Self only IS, and everything else in Creation is running automatically. Similarly, in your life, the Self only IS, and everything you do is just done automatically. When you disengage the ego, it still gets done, and then you realize that the Self only IS.

There has never been anything else but the Self, which means that "you" don't exist! Your existence is a delusion of your ego. You say, "I am," but that is simply the illusion produced by the ego. The ego says, "Hey, I am!; and I am separate from those other silly egos." Your mind says, "I am separate from those other silly minds." Your body says, "I am separate from those other silly bodies." But actually, you don't exist at all. The real thing which exists is the Self. The Self only IS.

As you practice this method, you will realize that you existed as a temporary, illusionary creation of your own ego. Then you will suddenly realize that what really exists inside you is an Immortal Being, a Timeless, Spaceless, Transcendental, Unconditioned, Absolute, Indescribable Being! That is the Self, which is what you really are! You switch from a temporary ego-creation into an Eternal Reality, a Timeless Absolute Condition.

Whatever happens to you, whatever you are doing, just remind yourself: Sitting Quietly Doing Nothing. This means that the action gets done through you. You are simply the agency through which it can be done. If you can live that all throughout the day, then by the end of the day, you will realize that the Self only IS. Everything still gets done. We still eat, but the cooks don't say, "I cooked it." They say, "It was cooked, and we ate." The Self was the only thing which did all these things. Everything, from the biggest sunbursts to every atomic action, is only the action of the Self. The Self only IS; there is no active principle in the whole of Creation except the Self.

This is the amazing realization of this Path: You are simply an agent of the Self, through which the Self does what it does. The Self needs to do this, so it is done. It is important for the Self that you eat, so you eat. In this temporary Creation, it has been so ordained that you put socks on, so it is important for the Self that you put socks on. When, in the future Creation, it is no longer required to have socks, the Self won't require you to have socks, so you won't have socks. The Self only IS, and we exist as executives of Its Will, by which things are done. That is all.
