The Path
BY IMRE VALLYON. EXCERPT FROM THE SEDONA TALKS
You have to understand that all your life you have been conditioned to work from the level of your personality. You have worked with the idea that you have to conquer the world, conquer other people, master something or another, or manipulate a situation or a person to get somewhere. This is fine on the personality level—it is how you get along in the world—but it does not work in Spiritual Life! It is a total hindrance in one's journey towards the Light. You cannot manipulate your way towards the Light! Even if you are the most brilliant manipulator on this globe, the Light will not respond to you whatsoever, nor will a true Spiritual Teacher take you as a pupil. No true Teacher will take a manipulating type as a pupil.

This may be difficult to understand for those people who have brilliant minds, brilliant careers, success. They are successful because they are clever in their minds, and in the world that is fine. For success in the world you need to have a bright mind, and you need to be able to manipulate money, people, resources, abilities. On a worldly level that is what you do, but the Spirit does not respond whatsoever to such things, and neither will a true Spiritual Teacher. Anybody who teaches you otherwise is a fake; no real Spiritual Teacher, angel, god, or truly Divine Person will encourage your ego one iota. No real Teacher will ever puff you up or make you proud, or tell you that you are such a wonderful person or so highly evolved. Nor will any real angel or enlightened spirit ever tell you that.

If you hear such things from a spirit or from a teacher, fly as fast as you can; that teacher is a fake! True Teachers will not bolster up your ego; they will squash it! They will demolish it completely.

It is important to understand why this is so. There is nothing wrong with the ego; it is because we have egos that we can live in the world and do things in the world. But the Spirit does not respond to the ego. If you want to even remotely approach the Spirit within you, you have to become humble, simple, natural. The true disciples don't go about and say that they are great. They don't set themselves up as special creatures who have been chosen by the great This or That. No, they have a simplicity, a simple beingness, a simple naturalness. They are in the world but not of the world. They don't want the world's glamour, the name and the fame and all that goes with it, for it is a hindrance to the Path. They work from simple beingness, just being as they are.

The Path comes from inside yourself; it is not imposed from the outside. In previous ages there were conditions laid down before you could even approach the Spiritual Path. They told you that you had to be vegetarian; that you couldn't smoke; that you could have no sex, no family, no job, no work, no fun, nothing. You went into a cave and you meditated, or you went into a monastery or a nunnery, or out into the desert or some desolate condition, and you meditated. You had to renounce the normal, natural, human self before you even started!

Jesus said that it's not what goes into your mouth that is important, but what comes out of it. What you say, what you think, what you feel, what you are—this is what is important! It is no longer important to go into a monastery or a nunnery. We don't have to be converted to Tibetan Buddhism. We don't have to become Hindu yogis. We don't have to become Zen monks. We don't have to become anything other than what we are. To be what you are is exactly the Plan. If you are married, that is fine; if you are not married, that is fine. Wherever you are, you start. You are the Path—the beginning, the middle, and the end of it.
