Why Scientists are often Baffled by Paranormal Phenomena
BY IMRE VALLYON. EXCERPT FROM IN LIFE AND IN DEATH
One endlessly hears of doctors and scientists being baffled by paranormal phenomena. This is solely due to their false view of reality.

Physical bodies are not realities, not even primary causes, but are, in fact, effects or appearances only, even as this world is not the real world.

This is in total contradiction to the materialists who erroneously believe that the body is the "real" thing, and such things as ghosts, spirits, and astral bodies are unreal, figments of imagination or hallucination. Such incorrect thinking explains why such people cannot understand the many ESP and psychic phenomena, which have been universal in all ages and in all countries. They try to either disbelieve them altogether (to trash them) or to find a bodily explanation for them, such as "brain activity" or "activity of the nervous system." Such reasoning does not coincide with the observed facts of countless thousands of years.

The fact is that every single thing—a human, a bird, a tree, an animal—has an astral body, a luminous form which inhabits the physical form, which is the more real part, the more real nature, and the physical form is only an addition, an extension of this luminous body. So, at the death of a child, man, or woman, a cat or dog, a bird or tree, an insect or a blade of grass, the consciousness merely transfers itself from the gross form to the subtler form in a purely natural way.

What comes first is this luminous body in which an entity encloses itself. The physical is merely an addendum. This luminous body was before birth, is during the life of the physical form, and continues naturally after the death of the physical form.

This luminous form dwells in the ocean of astral substance in and around this perceivable material universe. The Astral World is its natural habitat, which likewise is the more real world. This physical realm of existence is but a shadow, a vacuum, a hole in the greater Astral Universe around us.

There is no death. It is impossible to think of such an idea. There is only a switching of consciousness from the gross and temporary manifestation back into the more permanent one.

Types of Astral Projection:

Spontaneous or Unwilled Astral Projection

These experiences occur while you are about to fall asleep or wake up, or when you are actually "asleep". You will find yourself suddenly "awake" but outside of your body. You will be floating or swaying upwards towards the ceiling, looking down upon your physical body lying on the bed. All of this is totally natural.

It is amazing to find that parapsychologists cannot explain why the "self" can separate itself from the body. It is so simple. The "self" is not the body, and that is all there is to it. The body is just an appendage, like a suit or a dress, and you just "take it off".

Under Anesthesia

When you receive a general anesthetic before an operation, you normally become "unconscious". In this case you exteriorize yourself violently from your physical body. You have no memory of what happened because you "went out" like lightning.

Yet many people do experience intelligence and consciousness while under anesthetic. In this case you react to the anesthetic by drawing yourself out of your body, but you see and hear and feel everything. You will see your physical body lying on the operating table, and you, yourself, hovering above it and looking down upon the scene. You will observe the operation, hear what the doctors and nurses say, but feel no physical pain. Your emotions are free; you might be angry, or calm, or doubtful about the operation and what they are doing to you. After you've been brought back into your physical body you will feel pain, and if you tell the doctors and nurses what you saw and heard, they will tell you that you were hallucinating!

Drowning

If you are drowning, your body struggles for air, but as soon as you give up or realize that you are not the body, you will find yourself standing clear of your body. You will rise through the water and above the surface and observe your body and everything around it.

Being violently killed by accident or war

If you have a serious accident, or get killed in a war or other situation, you will astral-project very suddenly. You will feel yourself suddenly floating up and away from your body and observe the mangled mess beneath you. You will feel a sense of exhilaration and joy as you realize that "this is death". You will realize that you are not the body, that you are indestructible. This sense of being alive, completely conscious and in command of your faculties, and still able to think and feel and act, will surprise you initially. The realization that you are not the body (which is lying down there in a heap!) gives you an extreme sense of freedom, happiness, and overwhelming joy. You will know that there is no death.

Hypnotic Astral Projection

It is possible to experience astral projection under hypnosis. This state is induced by the suggestions of the hypnotist. In the olden days there were priests, witch doctors, shamans, tohungas, and lamas who employed a suitable medium (usually a young girl or woman) whom they hypnotized and sent "astral traveling" to distant places. In this way they gained "information" which they needed for their purposes.

Today's hypnotists are not so sophisticated, since they do not understand the process. But it is still possible that the subject inadvertently leaves his or her body during a hypnosis session. Again, this is completely natural. In this condition you can go to various places in your astral body and report back what you have seen and heard.

Conscious Astral Projection

Some people are born with the faculty to leave their bodies at will. This is called conscious or voluntary astral projection. Others develop it by persisting with various relaxation methods until they can leave their bodies at will. For thousands of years the Tibetan and Hindu Yogis developed methods for leaving the body at will, for consciously "dying" and coming back at will.

You cannot get out of your body consciously unless you are relaxed. That is all there is to it. The secret lies in relaxation to such a degree that you step out of your body.

Astral Projections by Drugs

Many of the hallucinogenic drugs, such as marijuana, hashish, LSD, and psilocybin, can produce astral projections. In fact, herbs, plants, and mushrooms were commonly used in all ancient cultures to induce a state of astral projection. It was practiced in India, Tibet, the Far East, Ancient Greece and Rome, China, Russia, amongst the North and South American Indians, the Eskimos, the tribes of Africa, the European peasants, and so on. In fact, it would be a difficult thing to find a spot on Earth where this has not been practiced. Herbs, plants, and mushrooms prepared and taken in various ways produce hallucinations, but often genuine astral projections as well. Whether you end up merely hallucinating or have a genuine astral projection experience depends on your preparation and the state of mind you were in.

It is noteworthy that in Ancient India they employed a drug called Soma to produce an astral projection or out-of-body experience, and another drug called Sanjivani to induce the "self" back into the body.

Mediumship and Astral Projection

Many mediums astral-project. Such a medium will leave her body and stand beside it, thus leaving her body open for a spook to enter and speak and act through it.

This is an extremely negative affair. The medium is unconscious; afterwards she does not recall what happened or what has been said. Also, this process drains the psychic energies of the "sitters" in the room. If a person is born mediumistic, this very often leads to possession by the spook. Such activity should be discouraged as unhealthy, both in the physical and psychic sense.

Possession

Possession can be either voluntary or involuntary. There are people who are quite happy to be possessed; they step out of their bodies and let an astral entity take over their bodies. Very often these mediums are misguided and ignorant individuals, often suffering from a huge ego drive and the love of personality worship and adoration. They feel that they are special, or even that they have been specially "chosen" by the White Brothers, that they are "important", that they have a great "message" to give to mankind, and so forth.

There is a lot of self-delusion in this mentality, and the spooks on the other side make good use of it. They usually say how wonderful the medium is, what great "initiations" she has passed, what a special chosen vessel she is, and so on. All these spooks are really but negatives and do not constitute the members of the Great White Brotherhood. The members of the real Spiritual Hierarchy do not spook.

The more tragic cases are those who are involuntarily thrown out of their bodies and possessed. If this happens to you, the possessing entity manoeuvres from the Astral Plane to dislocate you from your own body so that he or she can take control of it. The invading spook literally casts you out from your own house (your body), evicts you by force. You may initially experience "blackouts" or periods of "unconsciousness" when you do things that you cannot remember. After a while, this develops into a split-personality syndrome, and you become either insane or fully possessed. You will hear a voice in your head, or voices (if more than one spook is involved), directing you—almost demanding or even threatening you. It is at this stage that many people break down and go insane. If you do not go insane, the spirit or spirits take over your body.

There are many reasons why certain spirits want to dislocate you from your body and take it over:

a. They do not realize that they are "dead".

b. They committed a crime of some sort, the consciousness of which makes them feel guilty, and they want to do something about it.

c. They want to vent vengeance upon you or someone else.

d. They are self-deluded and believe themselves to be "Christ," "God," a "master," a "spaceman," a "flying saucer captain," a "martian," a "venusian," or an important historical person, such as Buddha, Julius Caesar, or Napoleon.

If you hear a babble of human voices in your head, or if you hear a single voice directing you and insisting that you follow his or her orders, obey not! Shut it off! You are in danger!

The real Voice of God, the Eternal Teacher, the Voice of the Higher Self, the "Small Still Voice", the "Voice of Light", is different. It is not the voice of a spook. It does not demand. It does not compel you, and it does not possess you. It only teaches you Cosmic Principles, or real Laws of Life. It has no concern with retribution of any kind. It is gentle, loving, impersonal, harmonious, uplifting, safe, secure, and enlightening. It is a Universal Voice that reverberates in your ear. It is Knowing—intuitively, spiritually. It is totally positive in its effects. It will teach you who and what you really are, and the great Truth of "I and the Father are One".
